Anthologies explore gay latino culture

Gay Latinos Writing About Love Edited by Jaime Cortez Cleis, $14.95 paperback

Hispanic and U.S. Latina Lesbian Expression Edited by Lourdes Torres and Inmaculada Pertusa Temple University, $24.95 paperback

Latinos are the fastest growing population group in the United States, blending culture lines across the country as the arts, customs and cuisines of a dozen nations converge and combine.
Despite the rapid rise in Latino population, however, gay and lesbian Latinos and Latinas are, for the most part, unseen and unheard, especially in Ohio, where most events for Latino Heritage Month don't mention LGBT people, and many LGBT organizations try to reach out to the Latino community but see little return on their efforts.

the end of the piece, requiring lot of flipping back and forth to figure out what is being said.
That complaint would be moot to someone studying Latin America or Latino writing, since they would probably have at least a passing knowledge of Spanish, but it would have been easy enough to put the translation immediately after the original Spanish text.
Virgins, Guerrillas & Locas, on the other hand, is almost entirely in English, with a few forays into Spanglish.

This anthology of short stories is exclusively male, as Tortilleras is exclusively female. Some of the tales tell of unbelievable homophobia or all-too-believable racism, the horrors of watching your community destroyed or the warmth and comfort of a closeknit family.
The voices are those of native-born Americans and those who have experienced life outside of the "land of the free," which makes for a really interesting combination of stories.
Editor Jaime Cortez contributes an interesting story of sexual compulsivity, while Francisco

That environment of silence is what has greeted LGBT people in Spanishspeaking countries since the social construct of "the homosexual" first appeared over a hundred years ago. It was not spoken of, although it existed. In patriarchal countries where machismo is held in high regard, soft men were treacherous and hard women were dangerous.
Tortilleras looks at representations of Latina lesbians in books from countries as far away as Spain, and as close as next door.
It's a truly fascinating book, covering a lot of ground. Its biggest drawback, of course, is the fact that it is very academic. Released by Temple University Press, a number of the pieces in it are fairly dry.
Another quibble with the book, coming from someone who speaks English as his native language and took French in high school and German (briefly) in college, is that a number of the pieces quote extensively from their source material-in Spanish. English translations are included in the notes at

X. Alarcón's "Dialéctica del Amor/Dialectics of Love" gives the reader side-by-side Spanish and English poems.
Then there's Pedro Bustos Aguilar's evil little story "Nueva Flor de Canela," which lures the innocent Anglo in for a few paragraphs, then switches to Spanish for another few paragraphs, then goes back. The half of the story in English was pretty good, so one must assume that the other half is as well.
As the Latino/a population grows in the United States, it will be interesting to see what effect it will have on the society at large. Conservatives have already introduced kneejerk legislation banning bilingual education in some places, while others have more openly accepted the changing demographic.
Will the United States find itself freer of more overt homophobia, as is the case in some Latino societies where it's okay for two men to (quietly) have sex? Or will society realize that, just as there are many races, all of them valid, there are also other orientations that are also valid?
